View on Map →Port has been aged and stored in Vila Nova de Gaia since the 17th and 18th centuries — the 1703 Methuen Treaty opened up English trade in the wine, and Gaia's cool, humid riverbank climate proved ideal for maturing it in barrel. Houses like Sandeman, Graham's, Taylor's, Calém and Ferreira still run their cellars along this stretch, most open for guided tours that end in a tasting.
