About Igreja do Carmo

Built between 1756 and 1768 in the Rococo style, Igreja do Carmo is best known for the striking blue-and-white azulejo panel added to its side facade in 1912 by the artist Silvestre Silvestri, depicting the founding of the Carmelite order. It stands almost touching its neighbour, Igreja dos Carmelitas — the two are separated by what's said to be the narrowest house in Portugal.

Highlights

  • Azulejo facade added in 1912, depicting the founding of the Carmelite order
  • Rococo interior with gilded woodwork
  • Stands beside the 'narrowest house in Portugal' (about 1m wide)
  • One of Porto's most photographed tiled buildings
