About Clérigos Tower

Built between 1754 and 1763, the Torre dos Clérigos was designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, who shaped much of the city's Baroque character. At 76 metres it was the tallest structure in Portugal for a long stretch after it was built, and its bell tower was historically used by sailors as a navigation marker when approaching the mouth of the Douro.

Highlights

  • 76m tall — Portugal's tallest granite bell tower when it was built
  • 240-step spiral staircase to the top
  • Designed by Nicolau Nasoni, the architect behind much of Porto's Baroque heritage
  • 360° views over the city and the Douro
